    Counselling Therapist Intern 

    Hello, my name is Janet (she/her), and I am a Counselling Therapist Intern at Couch of Hope. I am originally from Alberta and moved across the country with my husband and dog to a small seaside town in Nova Scotia at the beginning of the pandemic. I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration with a double major in Human Resources and Finance from Bishops University and worked in human resources and labour relations in the oil and gas sector for eight years. Through personal and professional experiences, I realized that my true passion was supporting people through challenges in their lives by providing a safe, caring, and non-judgemental space to listen and discuss their experiences.

    This cross-country move was monumental as I began my Master of Counselling Psychology program at Yorkville University and journeyed into the professional field of mental health. Prior to joining The Couch of Hope, I spent a year and half working as a Residential Counsellor at Sunset Community in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, which is a residential centre that supports adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, cognitive challenges, acquired brain traumas, and chronic mental illness. This experience was invaluable and rewarding as I was able to develop supportive and positive relationships with the clients, and witness inspiring life changes, resilience, courage, joy, and compassion in their home and in my workplace.

    My thereuaptic areas of interest are depression, anxiety, addiction, grief, and trauma, with a particular focus on how these experiences impact our thoughts, feelings, physical body, and behaviour.

    As a Counselling Therapist Intern my goal is to provide a safe and trusting space for my clients to explore their identity and their experiences. I believe that with the right support and environment, we can develop self-awareness and build confidence to identify problematic areas in our lives, improve our relationship with ourselves and others, and make changes that positively supports our psychological wellbeing and personal goals.
