Alexa MacDonald

Hi there, I’m Alexa (she/her) and I am so excited to be a Counselling Therapist Intern at Couch of Hope!

I am currently completing my Master's of Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology. I currently work at the IWK in Community Mental Health and Addictions as an in-home support creating and implementing behavioural plans for youth and their families. This experience has taught me the value of creating and maintaining a non-judgemental, safe, and supportive space.

In my role as an intern, I plan to utilize a trauma-informed care lens that addresses my clients' physical and emotional well-being. I can address various mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, substance use, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as any life stressors and or changes. The primary approaches I use in my practice are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based theories. However I am interested in working collaboratively to find what intervention works best for you.

To me, it is essential to create an environment that encourages empowerment and autonomy, as well as creating a safe and supportive environment.
