Leah Blackwood

Welcome! My name is Leah (she/her), I am currently completing my Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. I am thrilled to be a member of the Couch of Hope team as a Counselling Therapist Intern. Before beginning my studies at Yorkville, I attended St. Francis Xavier University where I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, followed by an Advanced Diploma in Addictions and Community Outreach from Nova Scotia Community College.

Through experiences working in Child and Youth care, Case Management for members of the homeless population, and working in complex care homes for those with mental illness I have seen how having a non-judgmental, supportive, and safe environment where we can process our thoughts, feelings, and experiences can foster personal growth and positive change. The experiences gained working in the fields above ultimately led me to pursue a career in Counselling Psychology where I can offer support to clients who are ready for change.

My therapeutic areas of interest include but are not limited to, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and chronic pain. Using an eclectic lens, I prefer to draw interventions from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and mindfulness-based approaches but I am ready to find an approach that works best for you.

My goal is to provide a safe environment that offers empathy and unconditional support to all. Through active listening and open conversation, we will work collaboratively to address your concerns, find acceptance, improve your well-being, and learn healthy ways to cope with life.

I look forward to working with you!
