Hello! My name is Maria Nemis (they/she), and I’m excited to be completing my practicum as a counselling therapist intern with Couch of Hope.
I’m currently a Master’s in Counselling Psychology student at Yorkville University and have completed a BA in Psychology at Dalhousie University. I’ve also worked as a peer supporter at the IWK’s mental health inpatient unit for the past seven years. My personal and professional experiences have contributed to my passion for healthcare access and outcomes for marginalized communities. Although much of my previous work has focused on neurodiversity, gender and sexual diversity, and eating disorders, I’ve been lucky enough to work with a diverse variety of communities and experiences throughout my career, and I prioritize an attitude of openness and curiosity with every client I meet.
My approach to counselling aims to be person-centered, collaborative, and non-judgmental, with an emphasis on creating a safe and supportive space for the work of counselling to occur. While I’m interested in person-centered therapy, narrative therapy, and solution-focused approaches, my primary goal is to determine the approach that works best for each client to ensure they get as much as they can out of the therapeutic experience.
I’m looking forward to connecting with you!
